Atlas Staging Area & Campsite
Atlas staging area
Location: Crowsnest Pass, AB T0K 0M0
2 hr and 45 min from Downtown, Calgary, AB
Our first camping trip of the year was at the atlas staging area which is located about 20 minutes past Crows Nest Pass. We were excited to find a place that allowed us to rent an ATV for the weekend and rip around and a place that had a lake close by. The great thing about camping in this area is you can reserve a spot at the provincially regulated campground, or find a spot in the staging area and not have to worry about not being able to find a place to reserve
The first thing we noticed was how well maintained the campground was and the facilities were well maintained and clean (clean for being a campground). We were able to fit two large tents and three vehicles with a trailer on one site, so there was ample room for multiple groups, which is great if only one spot is available for the time you are going. The site had the standard picnic bench and fire pit which was nice, but due to a fire ban, we used the portable gas fire pit which was great!
Another great thing we found was that you have a lot of privacy on this site. There was nobody behind us so it was nice to be able to play music and have a good time and not have to worry about disturbing someone 10 feet away.
The weather during our trip was not ideal, with scattered showers throughout the weekend but we were still able to enjoy the ATV area which made the trip much more enjoyable. The track was nice for a little cruise around and offered more advanced tracks for more experienced drivers. We would recommend renting an ATV for the weekend, because without it we may have been bored due to the weather.
Pros:
  • There is a lake about 10 minutes walk from most campsites, but there is a parking lot beside it if you have many things to carry down
  • Large campsites with privacy and clean bathrooms
  • ATV area close by
  • Lots of wildlife! Deer were spotted right behind our campground
  • There is a hike to Alison Creek Falls close by
  • Decent cell phone connection
Cons:
  • If any last-minute supplies are needed the closest place to stop would be Crowsnest Pass
